STATISTICS
Statistics of Lake Merritt.
Size: 140 Acres
Depth: 8 - 10 Feet
Shoreline: 3.4 Miles
Lake Merritt is the nation's oldest wildlife refuge, home to thousands of:
º shrimp
º fish
º birds
º clams
º crabs
º and more
Lake Merritt is also a tidal estuary, which formed thousands of years ago but has been extensively modified by people in the last 150 years. It is flushed twice daily by high and low tidal flows and receives water from 60 storm drain outfalls around the lake. With water coming from the storm drains and the estuary the lake has brackish water (it's a mixture of fresh and salt water).
The lake may someday be home to:
º restored docks
º restored wetlands
º classes in marine science
º drinking fountains by paths
º storm drain filters
