Filters & Nets

Other available devices to remove trash from urban runoff include nets.

Storm drain outfalls with and without nets near Los Angeles

Nets such as these, if installed at the end of Glen Echo creek, would remove trash from about one fourth of the Lake Merritt watershed.

Curb inlet filters are also being selectively installed by the City of Oakland at “hotspot” locations where trash accumulates on the street. However, these small devices require extensive maintenance.

Filters capable of removing soluble pollutants (paint, soluble metals etc.) are much more expensive, maintenance intensive and can only filter smaller areas such as a parking lots.
