Dr. Richard Bailey, founder of Lake Merritt Institute (retired)
The Lake Merritt Institute was founded in 1992 by Dr. Richard Bailey, whose vision, dedication, and advocacy for stronger environmental policies shaped the organization into a community leader. For over 30 years, Dr. Bailey not only led efforts to remove pollution from Lake Merritt but also championed policies that improved water quality and conservation.
Though he retired in 2023, Dr. Bailey’s legacy lives on through the Institute’s continued work. We thank him for his tireless commitment and lasting impact on the environment and the Oakland community.
