Redwood Day Elementary Students

We loved the energy from the 4th graders from @redwoodday! After a successful Earth month there wasn’t much large trash so we got to focus on smaller litter that adds up to make a big impact. The 40 students were running a count of removing more than 300 cigarettes butts in just 1.5 hours of cleaning up. The wildlife thanks you for preventing these toxic pollutants from getting into the water! #youngstewardship

We’re currently scheduling for summer groups, email us at info@lakemerrittinstitute.org!  If you’re looking to serve your community service hours, we are here every Tuesday/Saturday.

At an event by City Hall, LMI once offered a penny for each cigarette butt brought in. Hardly anybody participated, so we increased the payout to a nickel. Not much response. Only when, near the end of the event, we offered a quarter, did the butts pour in. As the homeless people got the news, we quickly paid out the 25 or 30 bucks we had set aside.
Many butts are in the tree wells.

But be careful. Collected together, these things are really nasty.
