Back to School: Students Kick Off the School Year with Stewardship at Lake Merritt

As the new school year begins, we’re excited to see students returning to Lake Merritt, taking an active role in protecting and preserving our beloved urban wildlife sanctuary. This fall, students are participating in our educational stewardship program, learning about the importance of environmental care while gaining hands-on experience in lake cleanups and scientific exploration.

We’re thrilled to continue working with local schools and youth organizations this season, and we look forward to seeing more students join us on this journey of stewardship and discovery.

Thank you to all the student volunteer groups that came out to clean up the lake in September:

  • buildOn
  • Oakland Military Institute cadets
  • Piedmont Community Service Crew
  • East Bay Innovation Academy HS students
  • Our Summer and Fall interns from Rising Sun

We were very impressed with the students working for a minimum of 2 hours but most them as long as 3.5 hours.

33 bags collected which totals to 825 gallons of trash from Creek to Bay Day 2024 at LMI
