In October, students from Park Day Middle School and Arise High School joined the Lake Merritt Institute for a hands-on environmental education day. As part of our new water quality testing curriculum, students learned how to assess the health of the lake by measuring dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and salinity. They discussed their findings and explored how urban pollution impacts these indicators.
Teachers can explore our Lake Merritt Watershed Lesson by our executive director beforehand with students.
After the outdoor classroom portion, the students took action with a lake cleanup, collecting bags of trash from the shoreline. The experience gave them a firsthand look at the link between pollution and water quality, emphasizing the importance of community efforts to protect the environment.
We’re excited to continue offering this bilingual program in English and Spanish to local schools, helping Oakland’s youth become environmental stewards. Interested in participating? Contact us info@lakemerrittinstitute.org to schedule your outdoor classroom field trip with LMI.
