Creek to Bay Day 2024: A Community Success at Lake Merritt

On Saturday, September 21, 2024 the Lake Merritt Institute (LMI) hosted a very successful Creek to Bay Day cleanup. With the help of 45 volunteers—a mix of regulars and many first-time participants—we collected 33 bags of trash, totaling 825 gallons of trash removed from Lake Merritt.

We extend special thanks to the neighbors of Lake Merritt, Oakland Military Institute, the A-Team, and the many friends and families who joined us. Your efforts play a vital role in keeping our urban lake clean and healthy.

Creek to Bay Day is part of California Coastal Cleanup Day, a statewide initiative with a 40-year history of engaging communities to preserve our coastlines and waterways, and LMI is proud to be a part of it. While the Lake Merritt Institute is out cleaning five days a week, year-round, it’s nice to contribute to this larger collective data to see how our ongoing work truly adds up.

Thank you to everyone, whether it was your first time or you’ve been with us before, for making this day a success. Together, we’re making a measurable difference in keeping Lake Merritt beautiful and safe for the wildlife that call it home.

Huge thank you to our sponsor this year, Equator Coffees Lake Merritt for providing coffee for our volunteers!
