Fall ’24 Lake Events

Lake Cleanup Events – Tuesdays and Saturdays 10am

Get involved in our community efforts to clean up Lake Merritt! Join us every Tuesday and Saturday morning. It’s a free, rewarding, and a great de-stressing way to spend time outdoors. Bring your kids, friends, neighbors, or teammates!

No registration needed for individuals.  Meet us at 568 Bellevue Ave, Oakland.  For questions, please email us at: info@lakemerrittinstitute.org

Lake Merritt Institute CLOSED on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024

The Lake Merritt Institute will be closed to new volunteers on Saturday, November 2nd. We will resume our regular schedule on Tuesday, November 5th.

Volunteers who have already completed safety orientation in 2024 and have access to our U-Clean-It boxes are welcome to continue cleaning anytime by signing in using the box sign-in sheet.

Lakeside Chat #48 – “Polychaetes of Lake Merritt and Adjacent Areas”Learn about the worms that live at Lake Merritt with Leslie Harris, Polychaete Collection Manager, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.  


Piedmont Arts & Eats

Sunday, November 10th 11am-4pm

A great family friendly event.  We had so much fun at the last time, we will be returning for 2nd event.  We will having a coloring and button making station.  Stop by our booth to say hello and learn more about our efforts at LMI.

The winter season should be in full swing today – everybody here (the canvasbacks, the goldeneyes, the scaup and the rest – and nobody gone yet. Come and see, rain or shine, or send the Thanksgiving guests to get them out of your hair!

13th Annual Autumn Lights Festival at the Gardens of Lake Merritt

October 17 – 19, 2024

Tickets sell out every year so grab yours while you can!  Art and nature enthusiasts from all over the region will flock to Oakland’s Lake Merritt to immerse themselves in the 13th Annual Autumn Lights Festival, a one-of-a-kind interactive art experience that is always the talk of the town. Prepare to be dazzled, mesmerized and amazed at this magical benefit for the non-profit Friends of the Gardens at Lake Merritt where you will experience 75 locally-produced illuminated art displays sparkling and beaming throughout Oakland’s beloved eight-acre municipal gardens.

Saturday, October 19th 9am-noon

Stop by our Lake Merritt Institute table at Grand Lake Farmers to learn more about our efforts keeping the lake clean.  So far this year we’ve removed 54,000 gallons of trash from the lake!
