Get involved in our community efforts to clean up Lake Merritt! Join us every Tuesday and Saturday morning. It’s a free, rewarding, and a great de-stressing way to spend time outdoors. Bring your kids, friends, neighbors, or teammates!

Lake Merritt Institute CLOSED on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024
The Lake Merritt Institute will be closed to new volunteers on Saturday, November 2nd. We will resume our regular schedule on Tuesday, November 5th.
Volunteers who have already completed safety orientation in 2024 and have access to our U-Clean-It boxes are welcome to continue cleaning anytime by signing in using the box sign-in sheet.

13th Annual Autumn Lights Festival at the Gardens of Lake Merritt

Art and nature enthusiasts from all over the region will flock to Oakland’s Lake Merritt to immerse themselves in the 13th Annual Autumn Lights Festival, a one-of-a-kind interactive art experience that is always the talk of the town. Prepare to be dazzled, mesmerized and amazed at this magical benefit for the non-profit Friends of the Gardens at Lake Merritt where you will experience 75 locally-produced illuminated art displays sparkling and beaming throughout Oakland’s beloved eight-acre municipal gardens.

Stop by our Lake Merritt Institute table at Grand Lake Farmers to learn more about our efforts keeping the lake clean. So far this year we’ve removed 54,000 gallons of trash from the lake!
