Lake Merritt is a vital urban ecosystem, home to a diverse array of wildlife. Unfortunately, dead animals occasionally appear in the lake due to natural causes, pollution, or other environmental factors. Prompt reporting to Oakland Animal Services helps ensure the lake remains clean and safe for both wildlife and visitors. If you notice dead fish or wildlife, DO NOT TOUCH OR HANDLE THEM.

Here’s how you can help report:
What to Do If You See an Oil Spill or Deceased Animal
- Take Note of the Location
- Be as specific as possible: Is it near a landmark, dock, or particular section of the lake? If you’re unsure, dropping a pin on a digital map can help.
- If possible, describe the animal’s species, size, and condition. This information helps responders determine the best course of action.
- Report It to the Right Authorities
- For emergency situations or hazardous materials, report to 311.
- Oil Spills
- Other City Services – for removal of deceased animals
- Oakland Animal Services – Use this link to notify Oakland Animal Services so that they can arrange for the removal of the deceased wildlife from Lake Merritt. Leave a detailed voicemail.
- Wildlife Mortality Reporting- CDFW collects and tracks fish and wildlife mortality reports to improve our ability to monitor disease outbreaks, detect emerging health threats, and help us better understand these events for more effective prevention and control. Link to report here.
- For emergency situations or hazardous materials, report to 311.
- Do Not Attempt to Remove the Animal Yourself
- Handling dead wildlife can pose health risks. Let trained personnel handle removal.
